I've been caught out like this as well.

On a related topic, I've never managed to work out how to do several smaller quotes from a whole quote (if you get my drift) as ahinton is fond of doing or how to do quotes from different messages in my own reply.

Hope this isn't as clear as mud but I know what I mean.

      Annoying isn't it.

      Absolutely clear.

What you do is decide where you want the break in the whole quote. At the end of the first bit (eg at '... as well' above) type [ / quote ] (but without the spaces).

At the beginning of the next bit (eg at 'On a related topic ...') type [ quote ] (again without the spaces). If you want the name of the poster & link to the original post in all the parts copy the [ QUOTE=Petrushka;255198 ] at the beginning of the quote & paste it at the start of each bit.

I think the only way is to do some deft copy and pasting... In other words, click on Reply with Quote as usual, then before you write your message, copy the quote as many times as you need in the box. Then edit each copy down to the short bit you want to comment on, and insert your comment; then likewise with the other copies.

For your second query, click on Reply with Quote as usual, then before you write your message, 'cut' the quote, go to the other message you want to quote from, click Reply with Quote there, and then paste the cut quote into the reply box. You should then have both quotes in separate boxes, underneath which you can append your comment.

It's a little cumbersome, but I don't know another way...

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

It's quite irritating that you aren't even allowed to preview how your quote has come out before you go on to the rest of your message.

This happens to me quite a lot and it's usually because I'm replying to a message that contains a final contribution which is way below the rest of the text.

But you can. Just scroll down and select "Go Advanced". Once you have checked that the quote looks fine you can scroll down to the reply window, add your reply and then check the result with "Preview Post" (which has by then replaced the "Go Advanced" button).

So what do I do...? Slip in a little comment at the end of a post after a quote that sticks a spanner in your technique?

You have a tendency to do this

And thus my reply is often stuck inside the space & I get the 'Message too short' business
