Just wondering if anyone here knows what form the New York Met live opera broadcasts are sent across to Europe, i.e. what codec is used and at what data rate? Is the stream of high enough audio quality for the Radio 3 High Definition Sound offering to be worth bothering with, or is the DAB/Freeview/Freesat 192kbps mp2 or dynamically deficient FM as good as it gets?

I don't know the answer to your question, Bryn, but have you tried the iTunes stream? It seems more reliable than the BBC's HD stream. Without looking it up I don't know the data rate, and am a bit busy now! (In fact shouldn't be here at all. Exit.) -

I'm having Christmas lunch this afternoon with someone else who should be able to find out. I just thought there might be someone here who already knew for sure. I somehow doubt the audio data is sent uncompressed and wondered whether it was of lower or higher fidelity than the 320kbps AAC-LC used for the Radio 3 HD Sound offering. kernelbogey, I accessed the BBC's iPlayer stream directly last night, and without any problems. I was surprised to find this morning that last night's Oo3 is available to Listen to Again for the next 4 days. Most unusual for Met transmissions. Unfortunately, I thought the production something of a let-down. I should have read up and grasped in advance that not only was it to be in English but of a 'family oriented' version.Comment

I wrote to the BBC complaints dept about unavailability of the Met Operas on iPlayer, though they are on RTE, and they said it was due to contractual issues and they couldn't comment on what other radio stations do....
I caught a bit of the Rossini last night but didn't like what I heard, especially the recits.
Now I'll go and see if the pans are more interesting than the plates were....Comment
