What has happened to iTunes?

That's similar to what I had before. That's what I want, more or less. I'll post a shot or two of the new layout, which is really bugging me, later, if I have time.

All you need to do to get the layout Caliban has shown is to click on the 'Songs' button.

I hate iTunes, sadly, as I have an iPod, it is the default software for music. What I found extremely annoying was when I changed my laptop, if forgot a vast number of the links to the pieces of music so now tells me I have to "find" them in order to be able to play them. This is extremely time consuming and I still have 3000 left to go and I got my new laptop 18 months ago.
This new version is even worse than the old one.
I wrote to Apple and told them their software was not fit for purpose for classical music and they should have a rethink. I never got a reply, unsurprisingly.

Possibly a dumb question, but that doesn't usually deter me:

I have just bought a new PC and therefore re-installed iTunes, the new version 11. I have amended the default view so that it now looks like Caliban's screenshot in message 11 above. This is the same as the view I had previously, except that I used to also use the column browser - however, instead of showing as a vertical pane to the left of the song list (as per previous version) this now shows as a horizontal pane across the top. This makes the column browser (imv) almost unusable, but I cannot see any way to change it back to a vertical pane - any suggestions?

It's a menu option View>Show Sidebar

You may also want to check the View>Column Browser>Hide Column Browser to remove the horizontal pane.

Thanks Steve, but I think I didn't explain my query clearly. I have the sidebar already (like Caliban's screenshot). I want the column browser as well, but as a vertical pane (i.e. parallel with the sidebar, between it and the song list, as it used to be in previous versions) rather than as a horizontal pane above the song list (which is how it appears in the new version) - am I missing something obvious?

If you use the genre view rather than the songs view you get the list of genres as a vertical panel between the sidebar and the song list. Is this what you are after?

Thanks robk and Steve - I thought it was just me being dumb, but apparently not (this time!). Genre view doesn't really work for me, as that's not how I organise or search for my music - though I see that you get a similar vertical column panel in Artist view which is a little more helpful. Would still like it back in Song view, though - seems odd to remove this piece of functionality, especially when monitors are increasingly widescreen and therefore make more efficient use of columns. Let's hope an upgraded version restores this (not holding my breath...).
