    Amplifier's own mind?

After rearranging my hi-fi equipment my ancient Teleton Amplifier suddenly provides output to only one loudspeaker when playing CDs, but output to both speakers when switched to Radio. Can't work out why that should be. Have been swapping leads around until blue in the face - still no joy. Any bright ideas?

Poor cable from cd unit? Perhaps if you swapped the cables over that has ruled that out.

Were the connections too tight? Maybe the connection to one has come adrift internally.

Thanks, Dave. Maybe time to invest in some new equipment. Having bought the set in 1979 I expect it's no longer under guarantee.

I had forgotten about Teleton. I think we had one once. Cheap and maybe cheerful I recall. It has done quite well.

I've had a similar problem for several years with my moving coil cartridge set-up. I've had the cartridge, arm, amplifier, pre-pre-amplifier and cables tested, all of which are supposedly fine, but still the LH channel refuses to play on frequent occasions. (Happily, it's working today! )

            Pianorak,

If both your CD player and Tuner are separate units, have you tried swapping them round (connecting the CD Player to the Radio input and the Tuner to the CD input). What happens if you do that?

If your tuner is built into your amplifier, have you tried plugging the CD Player into one of the other inputs, e.g. Tape or Aux/Misc? (DO NOT use the input intended for a pickup cartridge, often labelled 'Phono'.) What happens if you do that?

The expensive leads that I bought with the amp that connects the CD player has rather short gold plated phono/RCAs and occasionally one channel looses contact because of that short reach. The fix is to take the leads out clean them and re-insert then it's fine for a few weeks/months. I could get leads with better phono reach I suppse. A bit silly to limit the pin length at that expense but there we are.

A few random thoughts to add to the others: Have your connectors got long reach intothe sockets!? I assume that you've been swapping over input leads R to L on the same input as well as other inputs with similar sensitivity - NOT the cartridge input!! Input selector switch a bit dicky? In that vintage these would probably be directly wired and not relay/electronically switched so contacts in the selector could be dubious. Try waggling the switch a few times. Also the balance or volume control [or even any tone controls] tracks could be worn after much use?? These are common to all of course so unlikely. Any crackling when you alter them? Is there a mono-stereo switch or control? When all else fails it's the unlikely!!

One hesitates to admit to such stupidity, but I had plugged in the white instead of the yellow thingy on the CD player. Normal service has now been resumed. Many thanks, everybody!
