frances_iom - Thank you for your advice. It is on XP. I have my documents saved on memory stick. The cost benefits of a new laptop are useful to know and I will think about it although it is a big outlay. One thing that puts me off - am I really the only person who dislikes wide screen intensely? Ever since I got a TV some years ago with a wide screen, I've rarely watched it.

Sorry to read about your techno woes. I know what you mean about wide screens. My PC monitor is still 1240x1080 and I have no intention of changing it until it fails. Nor do we ever want to turn one of our living rooms into a cinema with a huge flat screen TV bolted to the wall. Having said that, my simple plan to cope with the London digital switch over was scuppered when the single scart socket on our old Philips TV developed a fault. The quality of the picture on small wide screen TV replacement was so superior I soon forgot about the old format.

I made the switch from Orange to BT a couple of years ago and it was very straight forward. BT very helpful in the switch.

I thought this thread was about Radio 3 changing from Tom Service to someone else.

Is it still steam-powered?

(I'm with you on the dislike of large and wide screens. The latter are now appearing more frequently in hotel rooms, and their zappers never seem to have a button to change the picture ratio, so everyone has squashed heads like creatures from Doctor Who. )

The screen isn't, but my brain is. Of course its 1280x1024. I was just having a Morecambe and Wise moment - all the right numbers, but not necessarily in the right order.

Until last year I was dead against wide screen monitors - they just didn't make sense to me as all the documents, etc I use are 'portrait'.

Then I bought a 23" 1920 x 1080 LED monitor (at the same time as I bought a new PC) and suddenly I was converted. The widescreen format together with the 1920x1080 resolution means that there is so much more flexibility. Multiple windows can be open and visible, two documents can be placed side by side, etc, etc.

You're probably right, it might seem stubborn to hang on the old format, but apart from limited desk space there's the question of cash. I fancied a Dell UltraSharp U2312HM but I couldn't justify the cost of replacing a monitor that was working fine.

the optimum (which I use) is an external monitor to the laptop using a rotated display - easy with latest versions of linux - put the document onto the portrait mode monitor - the major snagg I've found is that the mounting arms often cost more than the monitor
