Does the Gramophone still do equipment reviews? Only reason for asking is that I'd avoid them like the plague given that they thought the Brennan machine was the best thing since sliced bread. I'd focus on your loudspeakers. General rule of thumb is, IIRC, to spend 40-50% of your money on them. There is always Avforums for input and suggestions.

      Well said Ferret.
Perhaps we should have a Squabble thread where the usual suspects can bicker and slag each other off to their hearts content without derailing civilised discussions.

I wasn't aware that a discussion about the relative importance of Hi-Fi Components represented bickering and slagging off. And I would have thought it entirely relevant to the thread that teamsaint should know where to spend his money.

          What exactly is the problem?

Mr Pee..I've noticed (sadly) that any post you make, no matter how valid or relevant or how uninvolved with politics it might be, will inevitably be met with a contradictory and often unnecessarily aggressive response from certain other members.

As a 'certain other member' may I say that I was not targeting Mr Pee in my comment, although he seems to think so. I was trying to draw attention to the way in which so many of our discussions rapidly degenerate into extreme positions. If a person takes an aggressive stance on an issue it's hardly surprising that it will meet with a similar response from some, especially if that person is seen by most of them as one who nearly always adopts an extreme posture in argument.

It's all too easy to hide behind our anonymity and fail to consider the effect our outpourings have on others, especially if they are simply asking for advice.

I do not know how my comment about the relative importance of speakers could be construed as aggressive, neither do I see what possible negative effect it could have had on others. And it was advice.

                    Anyway, back to the topic:-

I do agree that if you are prepared to fork out a decent amount on quality headphones, they can provide fantastic sound quality.

Provided, of course, that the original source is up to scratch.....

Teamsaint, of interest, my route into hi-fi was via vintage Quad: amp/pre-amp/FM4 tuner, for starters, next stage was used BW speakers, finally a SACD, might take little time, but you should end up with a decent system for less than a grand, however I must agree with MB's that Richer Sounds offer the quickest solution for finding hi-fi budget bargains.

I had my Quad FM4 overhauled a couple of years ago, and it still gives excellent results in my system. I'm lucky to have very good FM reception
I did have problems with Quad amplifiers, but I doubt if there was anything wrong with them,it was just that my Kef speakers didn't like them, and the room didn't help.
Perhaps that reinforces the argument for always checking new gear at home, and not in the shop.

Had Quad amplification about 20 years ago with some amazing speakers that I cannot for the life of me remember the name of!

I use a pair of Quad ESL 63 speakers. In the past I had a Quad 44/405 combination, but that was sold maybe 20 years ago.
