Does the Gramophone still do equipment reviews? Only reason for asking is that I'd avoid them like the plague given that they thought the Brennan machine was the best thing since sliced bread. I'd focus on your loudspeakers. General rule of thumb is, IIRC, to spend 40-50% of your money on them. There is always Avforums for input and suggestions.
Apart from going to Argos and buying the one with the most buttons....

Teamsaint, of interest, my route into hi-fi was via vintage Quad: amp/pre-amp/FM4 tuner, for starters, next stage was used BW speakers, finally a SACD, might take little time, but you should end up with a decent system for less than a grand, however I must agree with MB's that Richer Sounds offer the quickest solution for finding hi-fi budget bargains.
