I’d keep life simple, gamba. I find that the time I don’t or can’t listen to music is precious in its own way.

Surely no explanation is required - just a sharp pin !

i have just returned from the Hockney and was entranced by the painting he has done with an iPad ....
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Artists were using computers for high resolution 'painting' back in the '80s. O.k., not on convenient portable integrated tablets, but ...

Must be something to do with Hockney's personality then

I have never known another exhibition about which 'ordinary' people, i.e., those without any experience of being painters, speak afterwards with such articulate passion and joy about what they have experienced. The same people say of the Lucian Freud exhibition "Oh he can certainly paint flesh but ..." and grind to a juddering halt of apparent embarassment but they wax lyrical for ages about the Hockney, often telling you as much about themselves as they do about what they've seen. 'They' includes 'me' - tho' I've not seen the Freud yet.

There was an excellent film on TV recently, ( yes, it does happen sometimes ! ) about him & incidentally, his use of the iPad. The most memorable aspect of this was in disclosing what a thoroughly nice, likeable, honest, kind, talented, wise .....( I could go on ! ) person he is. I happened to mention this to my son & what happened ? He arrived on my birthday with a large & very heavy parcel. Inside was a copy of Hockney's recent book, ' A Bigger Picture.' It is of such incredible & superb quality - take a look at Amazon & see what those who have bought a copy have to say. I've never handled any book which has given so much delight. However, although the cover price is £60 it is available for £45. It is something to treasure.

It's shown as being available for £35.95 including p&p on the amazon.co.uk marketplace listing. I'm very tempted.

Happy Birthday, gamba for whenever it was/is/will be!

And congratulations on raising such a careful, generous son

I've had a look at the book at the RA and it is on my list - there's a paperback version too which I think is cheaper (I don't have a generous son )

Bryn, go ahead - you'll have no regrets.

On Saturday we saw the highly enjoyable "Recruiting Officer" at the Donmar in the afternoon and after a meal break in a Thai restaurant we sidled over to Piccadilly for the RA Hockney show which was open till midnight. It definitely should be seen and finishes soon. The sheer fertility of his creative powers is overwhelming. I can imagine that no one will like all of them but many of the works are miraculous. I loved the light and colour effects achieved in the picture of Sledmere. http://www.hockneypictures.com/works_paintings.php. It made me want to visit the village. I could not quite believe how effective the IPad works were. The huge video wall with a composite image of the same scene based on the juxtaposed images from nine movie cameras was beautiful and strangely compelling. We finished off a great day out in London by meeting our daughter and her friend in a pub where they were serving Mary Jane Ale from Ilkley Brewery - quite appropriate, as it happened, in the context of Hockney the Yorkshireman.

Thank you for your good wishes.

I do have a very kind & generous son & he has always been so. But I have to admit that a recent appointment to the top technocracy of a vast & well-known financial institution must have been rather helpful !
I think he just wanted to celebrate the occasion. May he go on to further such occasions !

IMO Steve Jobs' talent was not as a cutting technologist but as a snake oil salesman. What version ipad are we up to now? The disciples queued up to buy the alpha-version ipad, only to throw it away shortly after when the beta-version that works a bit better replaces it. Are they annoyed and upset that they shelled out all this money for something that wasn't quite ready for the market? No, not at all:they can't wait to queue up again to pay hundreds of pounds for the next version and the next and the next.

What is an ipod but a defunctionalised MP3 player? Why can't you just copy files to and from it? It's not about giving people what they want, it's the tail wagging the dog. My advice is to make a list of the functionality you actually require, then do an objective analysis of what devices are available at what price.
