    Windows 11

Looking promising, if not that essential, at the moment:

It's years since I used Windows "in anger" - and I have been thankful for that.

Now I can see problems with MacOS - and I wonder if there would be any benefit in switching back to Windows. I rather doubt it - but without trying it out I can't be sure. There are several refurbished Win10 computers available at modest prices (typically £100-£250) and also there are some cheap new laptops (around £250 updwards).

Things I find particularly annoying about Macos relate to the windows management, and the way that the screen space is used. Utterly stupid for a system to allow the main application to completely obscure the files and other apps on the desktop, so that if one wants to do some sort of context switch then windows have to be moved or hidden, then the new action carried out or a file selected, and then finally restoring some or all of the windows.

Maybe things are just as bad in the Win world though.

Mostly MacOS and the applications are pretty good, but a few things are dire.

Looks as if I won't need to decide whether to upgrade since according to the app my 8-year-old Asus laptop is not suitable. It has Windows 10 and still works fine. Windows 11 does not appear to be a major improvement. I will no doubt want/need to replace the laptop before too long but for now will bide my time.

I have a couple of Intel i7 based laptops, one is too old to easily take Windows 11, the other is just about recent enough. I also very recently got a used Lenovo Yoga G5 Qualcomm-based 5G, which designation gives the game away. It has a micro-SIM slot to give it G4/5 connectivity for when the is no Ethernet or WiFi within range but a mobile phone signal is. That should be able to take Windows 11 but I am in no rush. I don' tfancy having to switch between 10 and 11 depending on which laptop I am using.

Yet another reason to hold fast on 'upgrading' to Windows 11:

I used Firefox very happily for years on my laptop and steered well clear Microsoft's browsers. On Windows 10 it is easy to opt out of using Edge. However, when I kept reading positive reviews of the new Edge, especially commenting on its speed, I gave it a go and found it to be noticeably faster. I still expected I would switch back to Firefox after my trial run but have been with Edge for a few weeks now and find it preferable, mainly because of its speed

My laptop and desktop, neither of which are very old are also not suitable. I’m quite happy with them. What I dislike is the arrogance of Microsoft who insist on selling us systems which after a period of time th3n refuse to regularly update! Planned obsolescence costs us a fortune over a period of time!

I will not be rushing to 'upgrade' to Windows 11 on my most modern Qualcomm Snapdragon-based laptop (which Microsoft assert is fully compatible with their new O/S):

The 3-year-old i7-based Lenovo I am typing this on does not get either a yes or no from Microsoft regarding compatibility with Windows 11. That will stay on Windows 10, too.
