OK - though I'm not a great fan of mobile phones, and I can't be bothered to keep my smartphone charged up all the time, which is not the case with the laptop. Also, since it is often the laptop which is actually used, it is more relevant to use that for the testing.

I quite like the idea of using an extra telephone cable up to the loft (we don't have a landing - only a single storey building) and putting the router up there - though that could be a pain if the router needs to be reset. It might be simpler to put a WAP up in the loft with a cabled link between it and the incoming router. I do think that having an effective WiFi hub above the areas to be served has many advantages.

Yes. Zen Fritz!Box Mesh network. Impeccable. Does exactly what it says on the tin. Flawless. Laughs at microwave cookers trying to mess things up. Laughs at thick Georgian internal walls trying to mess things up. Ditto internal rooms replastered using foil-backed plasterboard which usually kills wi-fi stone dead.

This is the set-up I have in the house in France plus VoIP Fritzfones. WiFi reception pretty much OK over three floors and in parts of the garden. Excellent router.

BT Smart Hub 2 in Scotland (FTTP at up to 1gbps installed at the beginning of last December) with BT Whole Home mesh network in an 1830s-built converted farm steading which has two-feet thick stone walls in various places. Works very well with three discs - giving the router a re-boot from time to time seems to be a good idea (don't quite know why). Much more reliable than the Netgear boxes now languishing in a cupboard.
