I'd been messing about with my Photo library and came to the conclusion that a clean restore was the right course of action. So I started restoring it from my backup. You also get the option...Keep Both or Replace. I chose Replace.
Part way through the Copy process, OSX complained that the Copy process couldn't proceed as the original was in use by another program. Que? Well, it wasn't in use but it was now and that was Screensaver which overrode the Copy process (even though that had started first). My Screensaver is set to show an album from my Photo library and had kicked in part way through the Copy.
That left me with a corrupted Photo library on the Mac but, fortunately, I still had my Backup and so Restored successfully. But imagine if my Backup drive decided to packup just at that point?
Which reminds me. I must make a second backup.
