Despite Automatic Update being deselected, over night my wife's iMac decided to upgrade itself to 10.15.7. That then initiated a request to set-up ALL the iCloud details to match those within iCloud. Not so bad in itself until I got to the point where it gave the option for syncing photos and told me that if I did that 147MB would be copied over to iCloud.

At which point I bailed out and restored the original system. She has 17GB of photos !

Actually have just discovered that Samsung are even worse. Received notice of an update...loads of irrelevant stuff that I had no interest in. For example...being able to piggyback on someone else's wifi if they are in your contact book. The potential for security breaches is huge. So I kept deferring it.

Today another message saying that the update has been scheduled to be automatically run at such and such a time. Well Samsung can shove it.
