Microphones ... sometimes a C1000 for instruments or borrow AKG 414's or basic SM58/57 etc
Processing usually using audiomulch but sometimes ableton
Interesting. The trouble with Scarlett is trying to figure out the models - different versions. 2i2 = 2 inputs, 2 outputs, 4i4 = 4 inputs and 4 outputs, 18i8 = ? inputs ? outputs - one might imagine 8, but looks like 4 of each - but 8 sockets - inputs/outputs number 1-8.

Also 2nd Gen models if still available, probably have old style USB - 3rd Gen models probably have USB C.

Some models have old style Midi in/out sockets. Not sure if that is necessary - since I hear that newer Midi kit uses USB - but would that mean a need for another USB input on the interface?

A couple of models also have SPDIF inputs/outputs and an optical connection - though maybe this is not needed - it might depend on which computers are being used - and for what purposes.

I am certainly thinking about this - and will presumably have lots of time to experiment now.

      Quick answer

Most computers still have USB B ... you can always get adaptor if you have a new one

I use the MIDI in for various older controllers etc ... very useful if you want a simple way of getting a keyboard to play as you can pick up a basic MIDI one for peanuts

If you read the specs it's pretty simple

Indeed. I will make up a short list and then choose. I would also want - for preference - an older MIDI style I/O capability. I don't have any USB C devices, though I think mrs d has a phone and an adapter cable.

The USB side doesn’t seem to matter - hopefully - as many new interfaces with USB C come with a cable for USB A, so the device should work with regular computers/USB. At least that’s what I’m hoping, as I ordered an 18i8 3rd Gen and a few cheapish microphone to see how it all works. Now there’s a long delay for delivery. Exciting and scary times!
