    Virtual instruments - recorders

I really would like to know if there are any collections of virtual instruments which include recorders, which could be used with DAWs such as Reaper, Logic Pro X etc.

There are many sets of synthesisers, and a few sets of "complete" orchestral sounds - such as the collection by Spitfire based on the BBC SO, but as recorders are not part of the regular large scale, or even chamber, orchestras - I think they are not usually included in virtual instrument collections. There are attempts at getting sounds in Musescore and also Sibelius. I haven't checked Dorico. My experience to date is that there aren't any really good virtual instrument representations for the recorder family.

If anyone knows of good ones, I'd be glad to hear of them. Otherwise I may have to find out how to make my own.

There will be tons of them

Compared with its close relative, the transverse flute, the range of the wooden recorder is more limited in terms of pitch and dynamics. However, they were very popular up to the baroque era, and is again more frequently used in contemporary music.

The demo samples at https://www.vsl.co.at/en/Additional_...corders#!Demos sound too good to be true!

I tried a few audio samples, and the video sample from this page is good - https://www.vsl.co.at/en/Additional_...ndle/Recorders

Do these work with most DAWs, including Reaper, Logic Pro X etc. Does any extra software have to be purchased, or will they just go into a "DAW of your choice"?

The price for the recorder pack seems reasonable, given the quality. Thc complete packs sound great too, but with prices to match.

[**] Re your tons of them - are there any more collections that you are aware of? Not that there might be any need - the ones suggested here sound very good.

        .
        I have no idea
if they are VST then they should
they might also have "standalone" modes (like GRM tools etc )

I don't know about others... though I have this fantastic invention on my computer called a search engine that seems to allow me to find out about things I know nothing about... it's some kind of witchcraft

That's what I have you for! Also accessible via my computer.

Actually I have tried a few ways to find more - it wasn't just you. Thank you very much for your efforts.

Postscript: The recorders sound quite nice, and I think the package is affordable - if one really wants it. I may go for it.

However, the price for the full wind section from the Vienna SL is considerably more than the price for the whole orchestra in the Spitfire Audio package featuring the BBC SO, which makes that latter package seem like a bargain at under £1000.

The universal orchestraExperience the highest standard in orchestral sampling with the world-class BBC Symphony Orchestra. A complete orchestra at your fingertips, featuring strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion — all recorded at the iconic Maida Vale Studios. Presented in our award-winning, dedicated plugin — with three editions to choose from, each fully interchangeable — BBCSO offers a universal starting point for music creators of every level – from those just starting out, to professional composers. The BBCSO Piano is now available — also presented in three editions (Professional, Core and Discover) and designed to work seamlessly with the orchestra.

Just that, AFAIK, the BBC SO doesn't regularly use recorder players.

Here is a "real" wind instrument producing a virtual recorder sound - https://www.suonopuro.net/virtual_re..._en.html?i6s13 - though perhaps actually sounds a bit more like a flute.

Here is a comparison between a piece of Vivaldi played on a real recorder and an electronic one - https://www.suonopuro.net/virtual_re..._en.html?i6s13

Spitfire Audio did have recorder sounds in their collection - Albion Loegria - but this is no longer available.

Embertone have some recorder and flute like sounds - which work with Kontakt - https://embertone.com/instruments/recorders.php

These sounds seem relatively affordable - currently showing as $60. However, according to the specs these need the full version of Kontakt, which puts the cost up several hundred pounds - close to £400.

However, there is a cheappie - an iOS version of an Irish whistle for $9.99 - https://embertone.com/instruments/shirewhistleios.php - not a recorder but might just be fun to have.
