I guess an international one would work but opens up a large interface that could be readily exploited though quite what harm they could cause to such niche groups is not clear - what I based my idea on was the usage of those groups I know about which do tend to be localised in nature tho I'm personally not on Facebook objecting to the collection of my data by commercial companies for the purpose of categorising me + selling on my supposed profile, collection by state organisations is difficult to avoid tho Apple's end-to-end encryption seems very effective, - the old fashioned academic approach was an email based group with users moderated for their first few posts which works well for the subjects I'm interested in.

I was responding to the query posited - the main social fault with Farcebook seems to be the amplification of malicious content - malicious gossip in a pub can be nasty but it stays local and in a relatively small group

      Angry people will be angry.
As someone who came to using FB quite late after avoiding it I don't recognise the "malicious content" narrative in the way that many describe.
How do you KNOW this is the case ?

The only unpleasant and offensive things I've encountered on social media have been on THIS forum.....

I think there are a couple of things (at least) about FB which are very problematic. 1. Global reach. If I or others do something "bad" knowlege of this remains local, and there is the possility that there will be no lasting effect. 2. Other people can either directly or indirectly create bad situations for other people using FB. There may have always been such possibilities, but FB probably makes it very easy. The years when I used to get on trains in the morning or evening and pick up Metro or the Evening Standard and note the rubbish which was published in the centre pages of those made me think that there really are people out there whose lives are going to be affected by false or malicious reporting. I think I gradually learned the true meaning of "the gutter press" by those journeys, usually to concerts or theatre performances.
