    Ripping audio from a DVD

    Advice please.

I enjoy my DVD of Birtwistle's Minotaur very much, but lament the fact that the work has never been recorded for CD, LP, download etc.

As such, I was wondering if there is a way that I could rip the audio from my DVD to my MacBook and then from there, transfer the files to my portable device so I can listen on the go.

    Is it possible?

Couldn't you just play it in real time on your computer and record the sound using Total Recorder, Audacity or similar?
    Pacta sunt servanda !!!

If you search the Internet, you will surely find various software which will do the job, at a price. For my part, on the very few occasions I have wanted to save the audio from DVDs, I have taken the digital audio output from the DVD deck to the digital input of my ancient Alesis Masterlink 9600, then, due to the Masterink's limitation of burning to CD-R or CD-RW, to CD-R in CD24 format for transfer to computer for further copying to USB stick or pocket player, etc.

Hang on. Looks like you can extract the audio for free. See https://www.google.com/search?client...audio+from+dvd or https://whooshtranscription.com/how-...-media-player/

I'll try that if I get no joy from Bryn's suggestions - thanks

I think Handbrake can do this - though I'm not at my computer so can't confirm.

However the free VLC media player can. See this article...

A step by step guide on extracting audio from a DVD using VLC media player. It’s free and you can do it in 5 easy steps!

            VLC download here...

Thanks Steve. I’ve come across VLC before, used it many moons ago. Will try it.

I thought I'd done this before using Audacity, but like stunsworth, I'm not on the right machine right now to check. I thought I simply opened up Audacity, loaded the DVD, then dragged the icon from the desktop into the Audacity window, et voila!

There is this web page which might help - https://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?t=33401

This does suggest it's possible, though might require extra software downloads, and might need post editing in Audacity to join segments together.

Other ways may involve video editing tools, though they may block any encrypted or rights protected DVDs.

It's possible I only did CDs before, but I can't check right now.

In the past I have occasionally ripped the audio from DVDs/BluRay disks, using free (or trial period) software, so that I can play it through my audio system.

This is different to the method using VLC in that it extracts the actually rips the audio data from the DVD.

I haven't used the method for some years, so there are no guarantees, but if anyone would like the details please send me a PM.

I use http://www.dvdae.com/ (around £30 for the full version so depends how many you are going to do) Fairly easy to use.

That's more or less what I do.

It depends on how good the audio circuitry of the computer and what settings one opts for.

It's not only possible, it's a piece of cake.

i've always used DVDDecrypter, which is still available free here: http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/. There's an in-depth tutorial online here: https://www.aimersoft.com/rip-dvd/us...decrypter.html.

i've also occasionally used DVD Audio Extractor, which isn't free but is very easy to use: http://www.dvdae.com/.

EDIT: Just noticed the comments advocating playing/recording in real time. That really is a preposterous suggestion - there's absolutely no need to do that!!

EDIT2: If you need any help, give me a shout - there's no need to pay anything to do this and it's really not difficult at all (once you know how!). Maybe a tutorial on here for everyone might be a good idea...?

Well, I've tried DVDdecrypter as you suggest but it keeps getting stuck at 7% and shows an error message. I had hoped to copy a DVD so I could convert it to view on my other devices. Presumably the DVD is too well encrypted!

Perhaps no "need" - but listening to a work we're recording might be something we want to do, so not so "preposterous"?
