    Apple - Catalina compatibility

Apple seems to have started to release the new MacOS version - Catalina.
I'm now a whole year or so behind, as I didn't bother to install the last one - .

Below is a list of 235 incompatible "apps" - probably due to the lack of support for 32 bit programs in the new system - taken from the discussion at https://gist.github.com/stevemoser/a...c3fb07d38373e2

Of particular interest/concern are of the apps listed which are AV products, Adobe's Creative Cloud, and Virtual Machine Environments such as VMWare and Parallels, which would enable different versions (earlier ones) of MacOS to be run in a virtual system. I'm not sure whether M-Audio driver would affect anyone likely to read this.

Probably most people who don't use/require these apps will be unaffected by installing the new OS version.

    As always with new OS

    DON'T GO THERE

I'm waiting to see the frantic messages on the CEC list (Canadian Electroacoustic Community) when folks install it by mistake and find that things like Protools doesn't work
or the expensive GRM plugins crash the machine

Note that Protools is on the list of ones to watch out for!

I agree absolutely that caution is needed. Trying to fix problems once such an install is done can be very complicated or near impossible.

I find it sad that sometimes older software is a significant improvement on that which follows it. An example is NoteCards - a hypertext system with typed links which was available in the 1980s - see http://www.cognexus.org/Hypertext-_A...%281987%29.pdf and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NoteCards I did try it once, and I think the ability to filter a network based on link types was very powerful. I'm unaware of anything which is similar available today - though maybe there is in some very specialised area.

I think Apple are trying to get folks to use Logic (which IMV, is the most inappropriately named piece of software..... ) though more and more people I encounter are using Reaper these days

I think this OS update will be much more problematic as it's (as far as I know) moving to 64 bit
this is likely to make anything that isn't 64 bit "obsolete"
as my tool of choice for most of the gigs I do is Audiomulch then i'm not going there

Indeed I think the intention is to migrate all the software to 64 bit.

Does that really affect Audiomulch - http://www.audiomulch.com/info/what-is-audiomulch

Looks as though 64 bit versions might be available, though I find it disconcerting that mention is made of now much older OS versions, such as Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion. I still use Snow Leopard sometimes, and I’ve found some software and also data which works on it, but not on later versions. I even use some occasionally.

The Audiomulch FB community have been talking about this a fair bit
the problem is that it's a piece of software that isn't likely to get an "update" as it's made by one person in Australia who might get round to it at some point BUT is more occupied with being a composer.

I've had to manually take a machine "back" to Snow Leopard ... not something i'm planning to do again

If you’ve still got that working version I’d suggest making a bootable drive from it - just in case. BWS.

                Why pay more?

I've had a few mailouts from Arturia and other software producers telling me on no account to upgrade the OS yet. They didn't need to bother really - I never upgrade the OS until the one I have becomes unusable for one reason or another. I guess eventually they'll find a way to bring that date forward to the day after the new OS is released.

After the recent ios13 update which removed all my mail accounts from my phone, with no viable fix for several days, I’m giving Catalina a big swerve until it’s bedded in and an update been produced. I’ve been a big fan of Apple for ages, but this sort of, to me, bleedin’ obvious SNAFUS, bodes very badly for the coming times,

Perhaps unrelated but I was required to do an update on my Apple TV ( with ATV, one doesn’t have option to reject). The Internet Radio app that we use now stops playing after 5 minutes. I am going to try deleting the app and reinstalling, but it’s a PITA...

You can switch off automatic updates. The fact that there's an update will be shown, but it won't be installed.

The words "horse" and "bolted" spring to mind - not to mention "stables".

I didn't know that...it's irritating because we primarily use ATV so that we can listen to internet radio and play in through the Home Pod, which resides in the kitchen. Now the Tune In app stops playing after 5 minutes, ever since the update.

The bliss of only owning a geriatric 2009 iMac is that all these OS X issues pass me by

So actually I fiddled with the Gear Section of the OS for the ATV, and did not see a way to block an update from automatically happening. I am at work today but off tomorrow so I will call Apple on my day off tomorrow to deal with Tech Support. Perhaps you have a different version of ATV than I have? It's so annoying that the Internet Radio stops after 5 minutes. I tried loading a different Radio App to the ATV and it does the same thing.
