DVD Problem

Looking for some help with an issue playing DVD's on my Panasonic DVD recorder.

The colour has turned a greenish tinge when playing DVDs. The colour is perfectly normal when watching TV via the recorder and the colour is perfectly normal when watching TV. It's solely on playing a DVD. It's the same problem whether it's one of my own recordings or a commercial DVD.

Online forums seem to pinpoint the cabling, possibly the Scart lead, but it's difficult to tell.

Any ideas on what I can do?

Has the problem emerged recently?

Sometimes the colour space settings can change between the DVD player/recorder and the TV display - worth checking what the colour settings are.

Possibly might have to check both devices, though I'd suggest starting with the DVD recorder. Make sure the cable is pushed in hard too.

You are losing the Red (of RBY) video signal somewhere. First thing is to check the Scart lead. I had one where one of the pins was bent so it didn't make proper contact. Then try a different SCART lead. Then a different source. It may be a loose wire inside the DVD player.

Dave, yes, the problem emerged yesterday,

Beresford, there is no red in the picture at all with anything red turned dark grey. I checked out the Scart last night and it looked ok as far as I could tell but will see if I can find another one somewhere. Bit concerned if there's a loose wire inside the recorder.

Had so much grief with Scart leads over the years. They, whover designed them, plus the designer of CD cases should be shot!

That I do agree with. The design was based on the Philips tape cassette case and the Philips open reel tape case. Recycling the idea for CDs really didn't work well.

When you say watching TV via the recorder, do you mean using the DVD unit as a TV tuner? If so, maybe your unit has at least two Scart outputs - you could try swapping them over. Otherwise watching TV might not indicate much, as some devices have signal pass through. I think most units now use HDMI, so perhaps that’s what’s feeding your TV display.

New Releases increasingly come in gatefold card sleeves now, some of then quite luxuriously & artistically presented, almost like mini-hardback books. Most welcome. And those SACD "super-jewel box" cases are pretty nifty too.

But if you buy 2ndhand CDs, definitely have a stack of replacement cases handy...

Indeed, BIS have now started using plastic-free cases. However, when it comes to polystyrene SACD cases, though tougher than the standard CD jewel cases, I have had quite a few arrive broken in the post.

I have a good many transparent plastic pockets - envelopes - in which CDs have been sent for review. The booklet or whatever can be stuffed in beside the CD; no harm is done so long as the CD is slipped in and out with care; and it takes up much less space on the shelf.

I am on vacation in a rural area. We couldn’t get the rental car sound system to pair with my phone and the fm radio choices are limited so I found a CD store (remember those?) in a small town and bought a few for the car CD player. I had thought they were used but were still in the original cellophane packaging with the sticky tabs underneath that to further frustrate opening. After losing a fingernail I then spent 45 minutes with a bread knife from the B&B extracting the discs. I don’t miss that aspect of CDs at all.

You’re lucky your rental car had a CD player, or is it a clapped out older model?

Is the US lagging behind?
Cars I’ve rented recently in the UK come with USB ports. Some of these work with a memory stick I loaded with music just for this situation.

I was surprised to see the Toyota Corolla has the CD player slot, along with USB. My 2018 Honda does not have a CD player

Maybe CD players are still an option on some cars. Perhaps some car hire companies are aware that some people still use/have CDs.

We may be about to buy new cars. Lack of a CD player option could be a real pain. Although USB sticks or similar are convenient enough now, I really don’t want to have to reprocess even the CDs which I designate for in car use - usually bought in charity shops - ripping, file management etc.
