I realise that we actually have a Roberts Classic 996 in the bathroom - nice little set with reasonable sound. Not future/Boris proof though as only AM/FM, no alarm, either.

Yes. It sometimes needs charging at the mains if there is a long sunless period. Not unknown around here. A red warning light comes if it gets low.

OK - so no practical alternative to batteries, then.

I hope you find that you can pick up R3 somewhere. It seems very odd indeed, and definitely worth contacting the BBC technical department.

Have buildings recently gone up in your vicinity, dovers? I'm trying to think what might be acting as a shield between where you are and the signal transmitter.

This is supposed to be (not everybody agrees when they want to build a house) an area of outstanding beauty, so there are no building higher than normal houses, old or new.

I took the radio outside and turned it on. Well, blow me! I heard Tom Service talking about the moon quite clearly. I turned it off, borought it back indoors and turned it back on and I could still hear him. After all those days of frustration, the trouble seems to have evapolated on its own accord. I hope this is the end of the trouble but I'm not holding my breath.

20 year old - nothing. I’ve got radios which are nearly twice that age which still work, and I expect them to for the immediate foreseeable future.
