I've managed to allow msn.com on to my pc but can't find any way to get rid of it. Can anyone say how to permanently rid a Windows 7 pc of this invasive nuisance? I've tried various 'solutions' to the problem that are on the internet but none seem to work.

Do you mean that the browser always starts with the msn.com homepage? Which browser?
I have not had the problem, but this looks quite hopeful:
" I have the same problem, but today I went to tools - internet option and then copied msn webpage. After that went to security, clicked restricted site and added msn there. then went back to general to set google page as homepage. wow, no msn, I restarted my computer just in case to check and no msn webpage."
Also when you restart, keep the power button depressed for about 10 seconds, as this initiates a cleaner reboot.

If the problem runs deeper, see https://answers.msn.com/solution.asp...b-3eac07d020fa but take note of the warnings re. backing up your emails.

Just reopened Chrome and no sign there of msn on new tabs so it seems that IE/Google is where msn is lodged. I've run Malwarebytes but it detects nothing and msn is not listed amongst the programmes installed on the pc so presumably it is lodged somewhere else?
Just noticed that although I opened this page in IE/Google the tab has changed to msn.

I've no idea what IE/google means (tho guess it means that google is your preset search engine - good choice in that you give two tracking companies your search info at same time) - you can Nuke msn.com by editing the Hosts file
DuckDuckGo "win7 hosts file" and follow the 1st link (read the text thru as you will probably need to make 'hidden' files etc visible and also you need to become system administrator to edit the file - this is discussed in a link off the page I suggest - looking at your Hosts file might indicate that you have had something alter it in the past .
My own solution to MicroSoft funnies/nasties is Linux.

Many thanks for your help with this, as you surmise I meant that I use Google via IE.
As a non-technical user the simplest things can baffle me, so I have no idea how to access the Hosts file
DuckDuckGo "win7 hosts file". If I enter the command in Run, it brings up a sample Hosts page presumably because I'm not logged on as Administrator but I don't know where to find that option.

DuckDuckGo (https://duckduckgo.com/html/) is an alternative, non-tracker, search engine to Google to which I assumed you would then copy the quoted string minus the quotes - however I suspect that administrator rights maybe being withheld from you on grounds of security.
