    It shouldn't be this difficult...

    Can anyone help?

I've being using an old but rarely used Pure Evoke F4 for the past 6 months as a substitute for an old Scandinavian dab clock radio which failed. (F4 is also out of guarantee)

This is now failing - the sleep function often freezes the radio so that the following morning's alarm doesn't go off. Only way to fix it is to remove the power supply and start from scratch!

So I'm looking for a replacement clock radio - my spec is:

    Must have
    Dab+
Telescopic aerial (signal not great here)
Sleep function up to 90 mins
2 alarm timers - choose stn to wake up to or buzzes etc

    Preferable
Sleep function on seperate button (it was the mutiple function presses every night on the scandinavian effort which fouled that one up)

    Nice to have
    Blue tooth

Although the F4 had internet I no longer need that as I have a Marantz for that purpose.

Guess what - the only one that appears to fulfil the 'Must haves' is a new Pure Evoke F3. It also has a remote control which might solve the button wear out issue.
Given that I paid nigh on £200 for the F4 is this insanity going with the same company? Why are there so few options available?

    Does anyone have a recommendation?

Might be worth a punt at this price...

Sorry - this doesn't answer your precise question - but rather whether there is a way to remedy the fault with the Evoke Flow.........

I have a pure "The Bug" clock radio - which continues to work. Its fault, requiring power down maybe once a month, is to use the penetrating alarm instead of the low volume Radio 4 alarm set for the morning, and freeze on that. So not so critical for me as we do get an alarm. I wondered whether to try a software update or re-install (should that be possible) but haven't tried that yet.

It might be worth your while trying something along those lines.

To access the support pages you'll need to register on the Pure website (they only want your name and email) and you may find these articles (found when I searched on " Pure Evoke F4") give a pointer:
      Resetting your Pure internet radio
("On all Pure products you have the option of being able to return the product to its original factory settings. As well as being useful for fully re-tuning the radio, a reset effectively 're-boots' the product's operating system which removes any user settings such as presets and timer/alarm settings. A reset can often resolve any anomalies found.")

Your Evoke Flow, Avanti Flow, Oasis Flow or Siesta Flow is unable to connect to Pure Connect
("Your radio will need to be running the latest software version (v5.1) in order to access the Lounge/Pure Connect. If you are seeing an error message then it is likely that your radio has an old software version.
To find the software version on your radio, select options > additional settings then select Upgrade. The software version should be displayed at the top of the screen. i.e. v2.5. If it is anything other than v5.1 then the radio will need to be manually updated and this should resolve the issue.
Please use the file applicable to you from the link bellow in order to update the radio.

Thanks both, will try the reset. Currently I can't seem to get onto the Pure website, which doesn't augur well for buying any new products. The 'Majority' is worth a punt at the price. I'm also looking now at the Sony XDR-V20D which doesn't have a lot of functionality - but has what appears to be a one-touch sleep button (according to the manual it saves your last setting - deepest joy). It's expensive (£124) with no bluetooth nor internet - but to be honest it's usually R4 or R4extra on my clock radio and just perhaps what you get for your money is a bit of quality in the software.

There's also a basic Dab+ by John Lewis which at £40 is okay too.

Edit: Ah I see the Pure website does work if you re-register. Funny it just gives a debug screen if you're not logged in.

This sounds a bit similar to a problem I’ve had with a Logitech Squeezebox Boom. Does that Evoke F4 perhaps have a hidden battery to keep the time/alarm going? Could be worth checking out.

Some manufacturers might be a bit naughty at letting their customers know about this kind of thing. My Canon camera recently failed in a similar way, but at least I became aware of the issue, and eventually found the relevant section of the manual and got a replacement battery. It now works.

I don’t know about my Squeezebox Boom - but it’s possible that also has a battery which has failed. Someone has identified a component on a circuit board which could be one, and battery failure could give the kind of symptoms you are mentioning.

Maybe a repair man could check it for you.

Ages since I bought a portable so I can't speak from auditory experience (I still use chunky old Tivoli and Panasonic FM models, or sometimes digital via a Skybox) , but a recent Which? newsletter picked out this substantial Roberts model as a best buy....

I've had the two predecessors to this. Great bits of kit. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Roberts-Str...rts+stream+94i

There are some pretty damning customer reviews there, regarding its reliability after only a short period of use. That seems a lot to pay for such risks. Also, it does not appear to have the capability of saving the incoming mp2 stream as a file, as early Pure models such as the Bug, Bugtoo and Evoke 3 did. There are much cheaper, and reliable portables with DAB+ and Bluetooth compatibility available. My Sainsbury special Blaupunkt does a pretty good job, as does the rather smaller Sony I mentioned a while back, though the latter is without Bluetooth.

Yes, just seen those reviews Bryn. I'm beginning to wonder if all these companies are using the same chip set which has inbuilt problems. When I look at the user manuals, for example to set the sleep timer - you have to press this button for a long period, then press another button for about 4 times to get the right timing then press confirm, to do this every night is bound to cause issues with the buttons/pads underneath.

I've been looking at this one - but my comment above, about using the same chipset applies, I think.

The Evoke has a seperately sold battery which I don't have (£40 odd) as I use it by the bedside plugged in. There are screws to undo to take a look at the internals - that might be my plan b.
In the meantime cockneysparrow, I've been able to log in now and downloaded an update, which might help.

                      so
                      1, reset
2, if still a problem, then
                      3, Update software
4, if still a problem, then
5, Buy the Sony - with its proper sleep button.

                      Thanks all for advice.
