During an online discussion, I clicked on a link posted which was apparently related to the discussion. The website had an "Authentication Required" pop-up with OK and Cancel options. But Cancel merely reloaded the pop-up (as did OK w/o the username and password). This blocked the browser so that I couldn't close the tab or the window - or get to the Firefox Prefs. When I did a Force Quit, it closed the browser but on reopening it, the pop-up was still there, blocking all browser options. Searching on Safari didn't get me very far.
It was only when I tried reopening Firefox again that I got the 'Well this is embarrassing …' message and thereafter Firefox has been fine, and I've removed three cookies placed by the troublesome website.
So what happened? Was it malicious or one of those things that happens? I've had 'Authentication Required' pop-ups but just clicked Cancel with no problem.
