Even if you are in range of stores, and those stores had a wide selection to audition, that still isn’t a guarantee that the purchase will sound satisfactory in your system, where it has to interact with your other components and the actual physical room itself

I don’t think I did, though I was making an assumption that models would be fairly common, and probably current. There’s usually a store that does stock such models - at least from the more “major” manufacturers. If the kit is high end and esoteric, dealers will often come and demo/test drive the system in one’s own home - which partially answers Richard’s point. If all else fails, use the customer service - for example chat or email - of the manufacturer.

Me: Hello, I was wondering if you can tell me if the XYZ1234 gives gapless playing of CD's.

        CSA: Yes, it plays CDs

Me: I know that. I wanted to know if it plays gapless CDs.

CSA: I'm not sure. Are they the very small ones ?
