Today I dug out an old AMD Turion based laptop which I had upgraded from XP to Windows 7 some years ago. Having fired it up I tried to update Windows 7 (not upgrade, just update). No go! Neither would Firefox run properly, nor even IE! I tried running the ancient versions of CCleaner and Avast!, both to no avail. So, next I tried uninstalling CCleaner and re-starting Windows. Still no luck, Neither Firefox or IE would update, and certainly Windows itself was quite recalcitrant. I cleared a few more programs and other files from the C: drive and again re-started Windows. This time Avast! was willing to update, as, eventually was CCleaner. Avast! found one PUP hiding away in the Winamp directory. With that removed, the acid test, would Windows update? Yes it would, with no less then 66 updates (getting on for a GB of downloads to do the job. Of course, these are only security updates, no new bells or whistles, but at least Windows 7 is not yet quite dead. It just smells a bit off.
Windows 7 not quite dead yet,

I don't understand all the technical guff, but the famous "April update" of Windows 10 completely knackered my laptop. I now have a new hard drive and Windows 7 installed. It works a treat. I will be overjoyed to have only security updates and no bells and whistles.

Windows 7 not quite dead yet? Well I hope not, I rely on it for my main PC and laptop. I have never touched 8 or 10.
I have an older PC in my workshop/cabin which runs XP alongside Linux, and this has always been reliable, although slow at times. However recently I installed some amateur software which informed me XP needed updating. This surprised me, as I have Service Pack 3 which was the final update. Checking the web, Service Pack 3 is freely available as a download, and is the final update.
Don't intend to mess with my version of XP, but I found it heartening that help is round the corner. If Windows 7 goes the same way as XP, I will feel quite comfortable sticking with 7 even though it won't be supported by MS.

I use various computers ( Windows / Mac / Linux ) but continue to mainly use Windows 7 - it has proved to be far and away the best and certainly most reliable operating system I have used.
As I understand it, whilst Microsoft are no longer upgrading the functionality of Win7 they are providing extended support ( ie security updates ) until January 2020.
