    Airplane Mode

    As a non flyer, I've never really wondered about this (well, I've only had my smartyphone a few weeks).

    Switching it off also switches off wi-fi -right? and if you have apps that don't need to be online you'll still be able to use them. And - more specially - it enhances battery life. Have I understood?
    It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

    Just keep it permanently switched off. You can still use WiFi.

      I think people were saying it's for those who want a quiet life without being constantly interrupted!

        Do you mean on or off? Airplane mode (on) usually disables WiFi, and probably Bluetooth as well.

        Having said that, some airlines have trialled all these things on and available. If you’re not on a plane you can do .... whatever ....

        If you don’t want WiFi or Bluetooth, and you only want to use the phone and network features you will save some battery life, though being connected to the phone network will drain your battery. If you have GPS on, your battery will go down very fast.

          Yes, I mean with Airplane Mode ON, wi-fi is disabled, but if you don't need wi-fi (or don't want to respond immediately to emails, texts, phone calls, the benefit of Airplane Mode/wi-fi OFF is that - so I read - it saves on battery life, especially when you're in a weak reception area.

          I'm not interested in airlines and what they might or might not want. They're bad for the environment

          It's a toss-up whether I shall leave my walking stick or my smartyphone somewhere while I'm on holiday

            Airplane mode ON disables all transmit/receive functions so that wifi is off and you can't make or receive any calls.
            Airplane mode OFF is the normal state of things.

            I imagine the former does lengthen battery life all other things being equal, but some apps do use a lot of power.

                .... though I do use planes sometimes as the only practical way of getting things done. Does that make me hypocritical? Probably.

                I do try to balance my use of aircraft against practical benefits - but probably get it all wrong. I think there should be massive disincentives for flying.

                    Only by explicitly turning those back on ....

                    If the airline allows it, you can use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth ....
                    I think the default is that they get switched off.
