Those since the big 'April' update have been much less intrusive. Mainly security fixes.

Edit:. Is this genuine Microsoft? - my laptop now displays the black screen of death
Still no fix as of MN last night...

Yep, I got as far as "choose keyboard language"...

... mine, now would be Anglo-Saxon!

Mine took less than two hours and it runs better than before, even though the C: drive is very full up. That will be corrected in a month's time when the windows.old folder disappears.

My April update has just finished - no problem, except had to restart Classic Shell myself which wasn't a problem either. (big sigh of relief!)

Just a thought - I don't know what stage you got this"black screen", but my PC also froze during the "restart/reboot" process with a blank screen - and I have seen this happen before with updates; but I was able to continue by powering off and on again - and it picked up where it left off, and finished successfully. On a laptop you have to hold the power off button on for a few seconds to get it to switch off, and then power on again. Whole thing took about 3 hours on my machine.

Only thing that went wrong subsequently was that Adobe Photoshop Elements stopped working properly, but I was able to find a fix on-line after a complete day of searching.

Thanks. Tried that, to no avail. I will have to get the machine looked at.

Yes- on my laptop I had to take the battery out to force a restart - the power button only made it go to sleep.

Had a 'megaupdate' this morning. I just left the machine to get on with it, popping back every so often to check that everything was progressing satisfactorily. The whole thing took an hour and a bit. No problems (so far...)

Probably best to move to a Mac, even if they are only just a bit better ...

Just discovered that this happened in my case too ...fortunately a problem readily soluble by even a confirmed 'technoprat' like me.
