Measurement tools for documents and diagrams

As an Apple user I tend to use tools such as Preview to look at PDFs and photos. However there are some things which I don't think Preview will do - and occasionally it's useful to know about other tools. Recently I was shown how to measure plans using Adobe Reader - not a tool I'd normally use. Many people would not use such measuring tools, and using them is a bit tricky and perhaps somewhat obscure, but if anyone wants to work with detailed plans, or indeed has a job which requires that, then this tool is perhaps one to know about.

I'm not sure about other tools - how many of them can work with "real" measurements. For example, if I have a photo of a house,
can I estimate the size of the house using Photoshop, or Gimp, or Affinity Photo? Can I find the areas of regions on maps in useful measurements? Can I put "real" measurements into plan drawings I might make with MS Office drawing tools, or OpenOffice tools - etc.?

The Adobe tool obviously works by converting its internal measurements, which may be represented diagramatically on a screen drawing using scale factors. What you see on the screen may be less accurate, as it's possible that the internal (hidden) representation may be more detailed than what is shown - and zoom tools might be needed to see or create fine detail. This is a potential issue for all similar software.

Also, some graphic design software uses vector representations, rather than raster representations, so potentially the resolution detail which can be captured or represented is very high.

Does anyone here use such tools?
