I'm confused. Videolan make a point of urging people to use 64 bit Windows, yet the download currently on offer appears to be for the 32 bit version of the O/S.

Good spot - I'd not noticed! I wonder why they done this?

Curiouser and curiouser; it identifies a 24 bit 44.1kHz file as 32 bit quantisation.

Slightly odd. I just loaded my version of VLC running on Macos El C, and checked for updates. It claims my version - 2.2.8 - is up to date. Maybe it needs to have Sierra or High Sierra to run. That'll have to wait for my MBP to come back from its battery "transplant".

Possibly not. My Windows installation of 2.2.8 also claimed to be the latest. However, when I downloaded and installed 3.0.0 it replaced 2.2.8 as part of the installation process.

There seems to be a 64-bit version available, see:

VLC Media Player (formerly VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable free multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG,...

Is that not one of their "nightly builds", rather than a standard distribution?
