Double click on XLD to load it and select XLD>Prefences.

In the 'General' tab select 'Apple Lossless' as the output format. Then click on the options button next to the output format and select the options to keep the original sampling rate and bit depth.

Back in the options window against 'Output directory select the 'Specify' button and press the 'set' button to point at the target folder (I also have the 'Add to iTunes' option selected as I use iTunes to replay music.
    I've done all that

Once all that's been done select File>Open and select the source directory. As soon as you you press 'open' a progress window will be shown and the files appear in the previously defined target folder.
    I don't understand this bit

Select File>Open from the XLD menu. A standard Mac file window will be shown. Navigate to the source folder. Once there press the ‘Open’ option on the file window. Once that option’s been pressed a progress window will be shown and the files in the source folder will be converted.

I don't have an XLD menu that gives me a File>Open option.

If you double click on XLD to load it you should see a menu bar along the top of the screen. One of the selections on that menu bar is ‘File’. Click on that and select ‘Open’ from the drop down list.

I don't think conversion to 96KHz will beef up the sound at all. None of the higher sample rates really make any difference, in my opinion.

Don't forget to try x-act.. (as in #11). I recall it as a simpler process than XLD seems to be from the above, and it is freeware....

Download the latest version of xACT for Mac for free. Read 110 user reviews and compare with similar apps on MacUpdate.

...and it always worked well....maybe try that one? Latterly though, I just use the converter that comes with JRiver Media Centre (usually to decode FLAC/ALAC to WAV). It's one of the main reasons I keep JRiver on alongside Audirvana, hard to imagine a faster or easier one - it does it all for you, anything to anything, but - you have to buy JRiver to get it, so....
I'm not cut out for this!

I downloaded Xact and can't understand it.

I have downloaded a trial version of JRiver and it won't even play my files, never mind convert from FLAC to ALAC. I'm going to have a glass of Scotch and have a think about it all ...

You could try a DAW called REAPER - it is a free download to try - and it will convert the files. If you keep it for any length of time it costs $60 (£50?). The trial is a full version - and it's a great programme.

Further to your PM, thanks very much Steve, I've conquered it. Cheers for your patience!
