Satnav Problem

Last month, on a journey from Kettlesing near Harrogate to York, I noticed that my satnav was taking forever to locate its GPS signal.

Does this mean it's packed up, or does it just need a new battery? Anyone know?

Was this worst before Harrogate? You will have passed a large radio station at the beginning of your journey at Menwith Hill .... your satnav's front end was probably saturated with extraneous radio frequency energy and couldn't discriminate the satellite signal. I suggest you try it again now (provided you're not at Kettlesing!)

No, nothing to do with Menwith Hill. I've used it in the area plenty of times before. But when I put a postcode in, it just says 'waiting for a GPS signal.''....which never comes.

How expensive is the unit and how expensive are the batteries? Presumably it's not a built in model - so you can either decide to replace the whole unit, or try a new battery. Some satnavs are more expensive, but I think it's possible to get a reasonable model which works (perhaps on offer) for around £50.

Mine is a tom-tom. I've had it since about 2011. I think.
