I may have hit a small gotcha today. I was going out on a photo shoot with a group, and grabbed a new camera card just before going out. After cutting through the wrapping (which inevitably took longer than expected, even with scissors), I put the card in the camera I intended to use.
The card came up with a memory error. I tried a couple of times - same thing, and then being in a hurry, grabbed a card I'd used earlier which worked OK.
Just before I went out I looked at the packaging - and noticed that it was an SDXC card.
On my return, I looked at the spec for SDXC cards and although they are (perhaps) higher specced than some SDHC cards, they may present compatibility difficulties, particularly with some older cameras. I tried the card in a recently purchased camera and it seems to work fine - so no need to chase around for refunds.
I do wonder if it's possible to reformat the SDXC card to work with older cameras, or if I'll just have to reserve that card for the new camera, or other newer compatible devices. The camera I was hoping to use is a Canon from around 2009, and according to what I read, the card may not work with devices pre 2010.
This may not be a big deal, but may serve as a slight warning for me and others to look at the packaging and specs of similar cards in future. I may have deliberately bought that card for compatibility with 4k video devices, without realising that it won't work with some of the other equipment I have. I haven't checked it with card readers yet - again - from the details I read, it probably won't work with some older card readers, so uploading/downloading files from computers might not always work.
Incidentally, the photo shoot was worthwile, as I got several shots of kingfishers, which I'd never seen before, and I saw one catch a fish and eat it.
