Years ago I was given an iPod Classic - but it hasn't been used much. That's a pity, as it's really quite a nice gadget. I had major issues re compatibilty, and trying to manage things on it with iTunes. At one point I managed to put some download files on it, but then I couldn't get them back off, and I didn't really want to wipe the whole thing and start again - which seemed to be the "only" option which Apple would allow. In the end I found a tool - http://www.xilisoft.com/iphone-magic.html - which was on offer a few years back, and that enabled me to copy the downloads back off. I was still uncertain that it would work with iTunes, though I think Apple relaxed some of the constraints over the years - and currently it looks as though it will work with most of the machines we have here.
Recently I actually had occasion to load the iPod up with some music for a short break, and somewhat to my surprise it did seem manageable using iTunes on a couple of machines. One thing I noticed though - which is still a problem - relates to podcasts.
I had previously put some podcasts on to the iPod - and the Xilisoft tool doesn't seem to touch those. It also seems that they don't appear as purchases in my iTunes account - since they are quite old - so presumably not available to download again. I was prepared to let them go - things like Building a Library from 2012 Prokofiev 5th Symphony for example - but I noticed a few days back that they do still work on the iPod itself. I suppose if I was really bothered I could copy these out using an analogue link, and since the iPod does now seem more useful than previously they might just as well stay on that.
