Virtual desktops - does anyone use them?

I wonder if anyone here uses virtual desktops. This could be in any system. I've tried in Linux, and also in Mac OS X, but mostly I've given up. Recently I had another go with Mac OS X. I get the feeling that there wasn't enough guidance as to how to use such tools, and also there are or are were some problems over time, such as re-assigning the key strokes between OS versions.

One irritation I have is that I'd like to have different desktops with different file sorts (including none) - but sorting the files on any of Apple's desktops gives exactly the same sort in all the others.

Another is that assuming that each application might "live" in one window may be useful sometimes, but not always. It is perfectly possible to use an application in several different projects - with different data - so it would be good to have that presented in different desktops - but no - doesn't look like Apple people really think about what real users might want to to.
