    Upgrading Mac MBP SSD

If possible, I'd like to upgrade the SSD in my MacBook Pro, as that could solve several problems, at least for a year or two.

I did a scan using the Crucial web site - uk.crucial.com and received a message that my machine has all the memory and storage soldered on board.

    Notes about your system:

All memory and storage is soldered on-board.

    We’re sorry.

Crucial currently does not have any compatible upgrades available for your particular system.
Even if the memory is soldered, is that a major obstacle? Could a decent maintenance/repair company unsolder the currently installed memory, and put in a new module?

Alternatively, I could put a new SSD in a caddy, and boot up from USB, but that's a bit of a pain as I wouldn't necessarily want to have an external unit.

These folks are very good in my experience and would be able to advise.

Expert microsoldering repair work on electronic equipment and components. Solder Fix offers component level repair on a wide range of computer and electronic equipment.

      Thanks.

This video, from the site, shows it ought to be possible - https://eshop.macsales.com/installvi...2_unibody_ssd/

      Still quite pricey though -

I wonder if the price will come down - eventually!

I could probably make an external SSD drive with almost 1 Tbyte capacity for a tad over £200 - though that wouldn't be such a neat solution for my needs.

However, I guess that replacing my MBP with a newer one would still cost a lot more, and wouldn't necessarily be better e.g mine has HDMI, though the 2015 model probably has better HDMI specs than mine (up to 4k video) - http://www.apple.com/uk/macbook-pro/specs-retina/ - but one can never be quite sure what Apple is going to change from year to year .....

      The 2016 model hasn't been released yet - apparently - http://www.enstarz.com/articles/1748...15-iphone7.htm

I had a look at currrent SSDs and prices yesterday. Part of the issue re the Apple MBPs seems to be that they may not contain a standard size SDD, so although the upgrade is now possible, it is very much a bespoke solution for Apple machines. I haven't checked to see whether Air models are also similar.

For external drives standard size SSDs can be put quite easily put into USB 3 caddies, and it's not really too difficult to do, but it's not the best solution for anyone who can afford the upgrades.
