I have been trying out Smart Mailboxes in mail in OS X, which seemed on the face of it like a way of doing some very rapid filtering of large volumes of mail.
However, the filtering options do not permit the generation of any arbitrary Boolean condition - at least as far as I can see.
To do that would require combinations (and, or, not) or (nand) or (nor). For a computer company to provide what appear at first glance to be some good ideas, yet to fail in this way seems negligent/incompetent to say the least. I suppose they miss out the user testing phase as well!
A similar situation arises in the Finder filtering, though mostly that's not so terrible - perhaps because the nature of the task of finding a files is slightly different from drilling down to a particular email message.
