Word (Mac) query

MS Word hardly ever ceases to amaze me. Mostly I hate the **** program.

Today I was sent a file in order to remove some blank pages which had been inserted in error. The pages were in landscape mode, rather than in portrait mode.

As I tried to sort this out (I did succeeed ....) I noticed a little cursor icon I'd never seen or at least never noticed before. Clicking on it seemed to bring up messages about formatting paragraphs or some such, but I can't be sure as I wasn't too concerned - I just wanted to get the job done.

Here is an image of the icon. It's to the top left, above the section break marker.

Perhaps someone can tell me what it is, and what it's supposed to do! I was using Mac 2011 Word.

Seriously I hardly ever use Word these days. I just had a quick look at Word and inserted a Section Break but didn't see that icon. However Word is so humungously bloated with so many many display and other options that unless one happens to hit on exactly the right combination that you've chosen PLUS the right sort of document, it will be hit and miss finding the options to display it.

Use Word all the time (for docs) and there are odd nuisances but nothing I haven't outwitted. New machine will have latest MS Office

However Word is so humungously bloated with so many many display and other options that unless one happens to hit on exactly the right combination that you've chosen PLUS the right sort of document, it will be hit and miss finding the options to display it.

Since I didn't create the original document I have no idea what keys or menu items were pressed to get it inserted. I also doubt whether the person doing it had a clue either, as it was totally unwanted.

I think I've seen it too on documents sent to me to look at, but as I've only been checking the English I've not been bothered about it.

Could be. I'll go back to the document where I first noticed it, and see if that has the before mentioned as Click and Type. Never heard of it before.

I'll report back once checked. All I felt was it was stopping Word from doing what I wanted or expect when it was showing, but maybe if I know what it is it might (ha ....) turn out to be useful about once in a million years.

Me neither, but having Word 2008, I found it under Word > Preferences > Edit.

I found some settings in Preferences on my MBP, but the behaviours are not obvious.

Looks as though there should be different cursor icons depending on the mode. I can't get this to work yet. I'll try on one of the other machines tomorrow.

When I was working at our local FE College I was lent (and duly copied for my own use) some installation discs of Word 200O by the IT chaps for loading onto my home PC. This worked pretty well and I got used to the program which was the standard across the College. It was annoying when I eventually left the college and got a PC with Windows 7 that this version of Word would not work any more. I had to go and buy Word 2010 which I still use but have never properly adjusted to with its ribbons and over-complication of things.
