    Printer Recommendations

In common with a lot of people these days, I don't do much printing.

However, my old HP is nine years old and is not compatible with my new-ish Apple Mac and two year old iPad. It is also not wireless.

I'm looking to spend my Sainburys nectar points on a new one, somewhere in the £100.00 region.

I've been fairly pleased with the HP's performance over the last near-decade, so would be reasonably warm on the idea of staying brand loyal, unless someone can tempt me otherwise.

    .

... I get the feeling that they're almost giving away printers these days. One of our printers died the other day and Mme v got a perfectly serviceable replacement - an epson xp 425 I think - from PC world for almost nothing. They make their money from cartridges not printers...

We had a fairly detailed and lengthy discussion on this a short while ago. Someone I know has strongly recommended a laser printer, and reckons that for printing black on white paper it works out very cheap, and it's reliable, and has a lot of advantages. I don't know the model/make, but I could probably find out fairly quickly. Colour laser printing puts the cost up a lot I believe.

I recently replaced a 10 year old HP which was still working well, but it had 6 ink cartridges which were expensive and one was always running out. I bought an HP 5646 - 2 ink cartridges, and it can use the HP Instant Ink system. Which means it automatically monitors usage, and informs HP when to dispatch new cartridges. Seems to work well. It also has 2 paper trays (which I wanted) and can work either wirelessly or over a USB cable. £63 at John Lewis

Even colour laser printers are reasonably priced nowadays, but they're of little use for printing good quality photos, where even budget inkjets are much superior.

I have an HP Photosmart 3210 All-in-One, which must be at least ten years old. It prints and photocopies and scans, though I have never used the scan facility. It is a bit slow, but OK for my relatively low volume work. The cartridges are expensive; I dont do much colour work, but the black ink one, which is bigger than the colour ones, is about thirty quid. I'd be quite happy to recommend the modern equivalent.

Conchis, you don't say what type or model of HP printer you have. Still might be possible to get it working with your Mac.

Or what sort of things you wish to print with it.

It probably would work with the Mac, but it's not wireless, so it would be a pain with the iPad. Mac OS X usually detects printers which are directly connected or on the same network quite easily.
