Doversoul - your ISP is correct. If I understand you correctly this is what you had

    THEN

Downstairs (main cable comes in) >>>>>goes upstairs to a socket and then from that socket goes back downstairs to another socket

    NOW

Downstairs (main cable comes in) goes to a downstairs socket (A) then a cable from there goes upstairs to another socket (B)

Your router is currently plugged into socket B

If that is correct then you need to temporarily connect your router to the downstairs socket (A) and see how you get on.

Can't you open up the socket and check it?
This is the very thing that made me realised that there was some trickery in the ‘main’ socket. In the past, I did exactly that when the connection slowed down. This time, following the ISP’s instruction to open the socket, I found that the cover was wired to something inside the socket and could not be detached.

(this household has no wireless devices)

That is correct. However, I am using a desktop and there is no way I can shift the entire system to test it out.

Thank you very much everyone, for all the suggestions and encouragement. At least I am not completely cut off, so I shall plod on. I still have no definite arrangement but one of the IPS personnel (?) did agree to come out with the new router and see to the socket and wiring. However, he sounds as if he is terribly booked up. Ah well, I know I have not been abandoned.

Are there no neighbours with a laptop who could come round and try things out? Because until that happens and we eliminate one possible cause (and/or your ISP chap turns up) then we're shooting in the dark.

A neighbour came to see what I was talking about but like a cat at the vet, it showed no problems while he tried this and that ….

He would bring his laptop if I asked but like (almost) anybody else in the world, he does not use a plugged in router and I have no socket for the UBS.

Well… as far as I know, my router has one cable plugged into the telephone socket, one to the electricity socket, and one to the PC.

So it's not one of the newer ones with wifi, or thingies sticking out of the top, then. That is limiting your options. If your ISP is going to send you a new model, then hopefully it'll have wifi as well. I think most ISPs do that these days.
