I think the USB adapters for photos may also help - might also be possible to use camera cards for transfer. I think those accessories work with iPad generations from 2 upwards, until the connector changed to a lightning connector. Didn't work with my gen 1 iPad though for what I wanted to do.

One thing which does work quite well with the latest iPads is rotating and cropping photos - particularly rotating - in Photos. I can't comment on whether there is a (significant) quality loss, but at first glance this does seem to do the job well.

I find it odd that in many photo editing tools that rotation often only works in multiples of 90 degrees, but often a more useful rotation by finer increments can be found, hidden away under Crop. The way rotation is done may vary, with some tools changing the image size on rotation, and care needs to be taken to get the final crop done well.

So can you not send attachments from an iPad email? That's how I often transfer files from iMac (upstairs) to iMac (downstairs) and vice versa as it's marginally less fiddly than using a flash drive.

Download into PC/downloads .....
Drag them to required directory
Back up as required ....

For Caliban, an iPad with possibly an external keyboard since his requirements are much more longer term and I can see him using it much more as an alternative to a laptop/desktop.

Me too... usually just to get photos (for decorative screensaver purposes) and music tracks from the main MacbookPro onto the white 2006 iMac in the kitchen which is basically now an electronic photo frame and internet radio/music player and occasional browser.

Well, I don't know. I just wondered why there was difficulty transferring a pdf from an iPad to a computer. Why can't it be emailed?

I am contentedly out of sync with the present century. My MacBook Pro does all I ask of it when I'm at home. When I'm out I take my 12 year old mobile phone, normally switched off, but there is case of emergency. I look at all the people around me, frowning at their flashing gadgets, and I feel very relaxed.

You have to select the document you want to send, and then email it, rather than opening an email and then attaching the file.

Yes that is why I have conceived a loathing for the whole concept of the 'smart phone' as used by the vast majority of people - as you say, phone constantly in hand, typing as they walk despite being in the most interesting of surroundings, and probably most on social media - in the memorable phrase of I can't remember who - 'desperately seeking the validation of strangers'. My reaction has been heightened by countless instances of cycling along central London roads and having to avoid pedestrians blundering blindly into the road staring at their phones. Crossing a central London thoroughfare at rush-hour not looking and whilst typing: can't think of a much better definition of insanity.

Then perhaps you don't understand how we are using our smartphones.

For the last two days I seem to have been driving friends and family members to various places, waiting in hospital/train station carparks etc.

I was able to bluetooth the entire Apple Music iTunes library to my car stereo system and listen to gorgeous music the whole while.

What was nice, was using my phone I was able to search, book and pay for a holiday that I will be taking in June - good to get that task off my to-do list.

And finally I made several international phone calls (one was a video call) all free of charge (except for my £11 phone/unlimited internet monthly tariff).

I suppose it's horses for courses, but I adore my smartphone and for me it represents hitherto unthought of utility and incredible value for money.

Horses for courses certainly. Doing all those things together sounds like a nightmare to me. Since retirement, multi-tasking is in the past.

for those in work, opting out of the many ways of being in contact instantly may not be an easy choice.

However, for those of us with smartphones ,it is best to remember that they do know what you are doing, where you are , and so on.

as Beefy suggests, its important that we use the technology , and that it doesn't use us. ( A vain hope, i suspect though).

I send PDFs from ipad by email to PCs all the time.

Its like a paid hobby, really.

I could send you one from my work ipad , if you like.

I suppose I could have waited until the evening, made some Horlicks and sat at the table and done things one at a time.

But just because I've been retired for about five years now, I don't see why this aspect of life need be any different from when I was working. And it wasn't a nightmare, that's all in your head - It was easy, enjoyable and effective (I enjoy helping my friends and family anyway).
