Well, have to say if I knew then what I know now, I would never have upgraded at all. W7 was fine for what I want.
The worst feature is the way W10 TAKES OVER THE MACHINE AND DOES WHAT IT WANTS. For some reason W10 seems to have moved all my pix out of Picasa3. I gave it no permission to do so, and was in a total panic before I eventually found them.
Can I get these pix folders back into Picasa? If so how?
Not had a problem (yet) with 10: if you think you've lost files, my advice is to type in the name of the file in the search bar (aka Cortana). A list of potential matches will then come up and you can usually find the documents you are after that way.
My laptop had W10 pre-installed and (so far) I've had no problems other than muddles of my own making which have been easily resolved. Maybe upgrading is more of a problem?
if so, can I install on separate drives so that I don't have to even boot up through Bootcamp, but be able to boot up into Win if I ever decided I wanted to do that?
There's not maybe much that I'd want Windows for, but there are a few decentish pieces of software which don't run on Mac OS X. That would be cheaper than buying yet another machine, and would not take up significanlty more physical space, since the machine(s) are already in place.
I am now given to understand by my computer technician that he is going to have to install me Windows 10 in the next few weeks, come what may. I sanyone else here in that situation? I can't say I am looking forward to losing my Win 7 at all.

You don't "have" to have Windows 10
You don't "have" to wear a tie
You don't "have" to subscribe to the fictions peddled about Serialism

Largely I agree with Mr GG's view about the imperative nature of the situation. Is the issue that if you don't "upgrade" soon then Microsoft will charge you when/if you do install Win 10 later on? Maybe your technician is trying to save you that expense.
I turned on my XP laptop recently! Then I turned it off again. It was still working, though.

Thanks Dave - I'll ask him about that the next time he gets in touch, and let people know what he says.

My expert recommended GWX control panel.
That seems to shut the door fine on Windows 10, and allows me to continue with 7 unmolested.
I've got windows 8.1 and am happy with that. I've refused all the blandishments regarding Windows 10 but I do wonder though if Microsoft will stop supporting 7 and 8 in the future?
The number of pop-ups I get offering Windows 10 is driving me to distraction and you do have to be careful to tick the correct box in refusing the offer as you can easily upgrade it by mistake.

Same here - I have Windows7 and it works perfectly well for everything I want to do - I don't want the faff of learning the new system, nor to experience the difficulties caused by downloading it that other people have described. It's almost certain that support will stop at some time, but by then I'll probably need a new computer anyway, so will sort out how to "adapt" to 10 then.

- exactly my experience, too. Apparently Microsoft have already downloaded the necessary pixies onto my computer, all I need do is request the Installation - and now it looks as if I have to opt to NOT have it installed every time the pop-ups appear.
