Anyway, will this do, or does the metal disc need a bit more hammering?

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

FF, that looks pretty well destroyed, but the disc is still physically in one piece and it might be possible to flatten it out and reinstall it in another system. I suggest you get some tinsnips, or a hammer and cold chisel, and cut it into pieces, then dispose of the pieces separately. Problem is, by doing such a thorough demolition job, you are more or less advertising that there is something on the disc that is important.

I'd already attacked it with a small fretsaw but it was pretty tough going. I was just going drop the disc in with the landfill rubbish, thinking if it were ever found it would be rusted and I'd be long past worrying anyway The rest can go for recycling.

The fretsaw will do the job, but I'm not sure these things rust, to do that they would need to be made of iron instead of praesyodimium, or whatever rare earths they contain. Just cut it into pieces and throw them into the fire.

As from Friday I think I shall have back the use of my wood burner, so can burn it if it won't explode !

Is there such a thing as a small fretsaw? I thought a 10" frame is minimum, and 20" not uncommon.

I was using the term 'fretsaw' to apply to a small saw fitted with a metal cutting blade:

                          That is a coping saw.

                          This is a fretsaw:

This fretsaw has a sprung steel frame which tensions the blade and a wooden handle. It will cut wood, metal or plastics with a suitable blade. The throat depth is 295 mm for deep access in sheet material. The blades are easy to change using plated wing...

The generic name for any metal cutting saw would be a hacksaw. If you're going to join in with the heavy mob, you need to get the tools sorted.

I don't think I would put the pieces on an enclosed fire in the house. Maybe an incinerator in the garden, if you want to try. Perhaps do one more cut up job, then dispose of the bits as you see fit. If you're data is not extremely sensitive that should suffice. For very sensitive material then it probably really does make sense to go for rather comprehensive destruction.

Yes I want to cut the things in half, as mentioned near the start of this thread. Someone who knows about this sort of thing suggested the best way is to slip a local garage a few notes and get them to cut them with oxy-acetylene gear. I have a little mews garage in mind near me.
