In this context, "Passive" means it does not have a built in amplifier. It takes the output from my stereo amplifier, puts it through a crossover, extracts the extreme bass, and passes the rest of the audio signal to the stereo speakers. Because there is virtually no stereo directional info in the bass, the subwoofer uses two speakers (one for each channel) mounted face to face. Because they are f2f, one speaker is connected in antiphase. If it were not, the sounds from the two channels would cancel each other out.
It certainly makes a difference to the sound, especially when listening to (eg) organ music, the "Dies Irae" from Verdi's "Requiem", or when watching some films.

The antiphase connection [rather than just mounting the 2 drivers side by side in the same box] of 2 drivers f2f also helps reduce distortion.

It also occurs to me that a loco letting off steam is probably rather a good source of white noise.
