          Since you asked...

In this context, "Passive" means it does not have a built in amplifier. It takes the output from my stereo amplifier, puts it through a crossover, extracts the extreme bass, and passes the rest of the audio signal to the stereo speakers. Because there is virtually no stereo directional info in the bass, the subwoofer uses two speakers (one for each channel) mounted face to face. Because they are f2f, one speaker is connected in antiphase. If it were not, the sounds from the two channels would cancel each other out.

It certainly makes a difference to the sound, especially when listening to (eg) organ music, the "Dies Irae" from Verdi's "Requiem", or when watching some films.

And when listening to your old Argo Transacord records of steam trains!!

The antiphase connection [rather than just mounting the 2 drivers side by side in the same box] of 2 drivers f2f also helps reduce distortion.

I am aware of these recordings, but have never bought any. I can imagine that they might sound rather spectacular. (Can sounds be "spectacular? No doubt a pedant will be along shortly to tell us. )

It also occurs to me that a loco letting off steam is probably rather a good source of white noise.

Oh, there was much more to Transacord recordings than the sound of steam engines. There are so many different sounds of trains wheel, rushing past at speed, or clattering slowly over points and crossings; train whistles, sometimes expressing impatience; many sounds of nature - birds and crickets in particular, and sometimes the distant shouts of railwayment. It's all so magical. These records are subtle rather than spectacular.

What there is, is fun ... (much, i.e. 100%) less chat, more paint, would have been my directorial note...
