    Worth upgrading?

I have a later 2009 iMac - 21.5 inch, with 4 Gbytes of memory. It "only" has 3.06 GHz a core 2 duo processor.

I checked out the Crucial memory site, and it seems there is an 8 Gbyte memory kit. I suspect that this would be well worth installing, and it's quite reasonably priced.

Also there is a 1Tbyte SSD option - for around £280. I have some experience of SSDs - they're very good. I suppose I could try for a cheaper 500 Gbyte SSD, and move data on to an external hard drive,
though not sure whether that'd really be such a great idea. If I did the 8Gbyte memory upgrade, plus the 1 Tbyte SSD upgrade the cost would be about (less than) £320 and that might turn this into quite a nice machine. On the other hand, it'll never be as good and fast as the i7 machines I have, though this one - the Core 2 Duo (I'm using it now) does have a nice screen, though not a Retina display.

    So, two points.

    1. Would it be worth doing the upgrade suggested?

    2. How easy is it to do an SSD substitution for a hard drive on an iMac? I've done a memory upgrade before, which wasn't too bad - though there were a few hiccups, but finally it was OK and gave a significant improvement on an earlier machine.

OTOH I could just go for one of these ... http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Apple-Re...UAAOSw5VFWK5~a .... or very similar .... http://www.ebay.com/itm/2015-Apple-R...3D291386063755 , which seem to sell for around, or more than £3k!

Thanks. Looks a bit scary, and the issues re fan control seem problematic. i also wonder if it really does make sense to cut out the fan control for SSDs, as the iMac can get hot for other reasons, though maybe the fan controller has more than one input.

Some people appeared to avoid problems by using the same manufacturer (Seagate?) for the upgrade drive. Some installed a hybrid drive, though whether rhese are in any way comparable to Apple's Fusion drives is difficult to know. How much SSD do the combi drives have?

Perhaps I'll stick to memory upgrades for now.
