    So where's the Mail?

    No, not that one.

I've just got Windows 8 installed on a partition of my Mac (never mind why). But doesn't it automatically have some sort of email program? If so, where is it? If not, um, what is one supposed to do to set one up that will work with Windows?

Should you happen to be with Virgin Media, you will not need an email program. Though I use Thunderbird on my main laptop ('cos its there) on others I just sign in to "My Virgin Media" and read my emails.

Google G Mail. Under no circumstances Yahoo mail.

Yes, I found something that has installed a whole load of junk but also (I think) Windows Live Mail so I've just set up a new email account (btinternet gave me 10 addresses, so why not use them?).

I'm not sure that the partition was a wholly satisfactory solution though. I thought that using Windows on my familiar little MacBook would be better than entrusting work to my now ancient Compaq. But once in the Windows partition, nothing Mac works any more . It's just Windows.

If anyone has any familiarity with using Windows on a MacBook, I might have a few more questions :-/

Pegleg or Johnb may be able to help- it may possibly be a boot loader problem - and then there is "Trusted Installer".

I have partitioned machines with Windows Vista, and XP, but problems multiply with 7 and 8 because Microsoft deliberately set out to make this type of operation difficullt.

To be honest, ff, I'd never run Windows on a Mac simply because OS's are tricky things and it was bad enough when trying to get Windows to work on a PC - let alone wrapped around by God knows what in a 'strange' environment.

If I needed to run something on Windows then I'd get a cheap laptop. Remember - everything we do uses an element of time, money and emotion. Running Windoze on a Mac, while not using much money, sure as hell uses a lot of time and emotion.

I used to do the dual boot thing, which did work well (apart from not working with an external firewire soundcard.
If you want to have access to other things at the same time you will need to use virtualisation (is that a REAL word?), parallels or VM Fusion seem to be the most widely used.

There are a couple of Windows only programmes I sometimes use but they run inside Wine (http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/) which is ok but not great and saves buying a PC to run a couple of old things (one of which is a rather excellent free emulation of Xenakis's "UPIC" so not wanting to give that up just yet).

It seems to be going ok and as I explained on the PC thread the MacBook is only for portability - not for working on seriously .

What flummoxes me is that in Windows the CTRL key doesn't seem to function in the same way for shortcuts. If I click on the Mac desktop and hold down CTRL I get a menu of things to do - most commonly create a New Folder or Get Info on a file. But this doesn't work so I'll have to find an old folder somewhere, copy it, delete any contents and rename it, which seems a bit labour intensive.

But Windows Mail does seem to work and I have a familiar icon on the task bar.

Yes, that is what I was going to say to Mercia.

I have a lady friend who had lost her passwords, usernames etc (she is probably every computer technician's nightmare), but was treated very roughly by Yahoo mail support. Eventually getting through by phone to a help desk, she was offered an anti hacking/ virus procedure for a cost of about £100, I believe. however I was eventually able to revive her account via Facebook, which had her email address in its records.

Since then I have advised her to tell her innumerable friends and contacts to email her via her new GMail account.

Never mind Yahoo … yee-hah! I shall be able to write the Dummies' Guide to Windows on a Mac soon. Program did not delete by using its approved Shift+CTRL+del but the answer on the MBP was fn+del. And the menus appeared by having the cursor on the desktop/taskbar and pressing the trackpad with two finger tips rather than one.

Strange indeed are the ways of …
