    !
    Do take note of this
BUT don't worry about it too much as I seem to remember that it's more than a single click involved to wipe your main HD (having had to do a complete erase before)

Disk Utility is very simple to use in my experience

I'll let you know. :-) There's nothing much on the Yosemite machine as yet - so if the unfortunate happens, I'll just be looking for instructions on how to use Migration Assistant to move what's on the Mavericks machine ov …… Alternatively, I'll just take a loooooong holiday and come back when I'm feeling less tired
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

All went according to plan on the Mac but the hard drive still doesn't appear on the laptop, so I shall still have to rely on the flash drive for transferring files from the laptop to the Mac and I still haven't found a way to back up the laptop (but the Safely Remove icon reappeared in the system tray!).

And THIS now has to take the prize for the forum's most tedious thread ever.

            Very sorry about that!

Did you put a test file in, as I suggested. If not, then maybe the following has the answer:

Now getting very nervous because having tried the HD unsuccessfully, I found the laptop wasn't recognising the flash drive which is my only way of getting the PagePlus files to the Mac … Now sorted, but a sticky moment. Not the time in the evening to start fiddling with something new …
