What are those features? I don’t do anything other than listen/watch the video clips. Do I need to update? I am using Window Vista.
So long as youtube works, I would feel no obligation to change my browser.

If it stops working you can then try upgrading the browser or installing another.

Frances, that is a most important point which I had not realised. I think the same may be true of Windows 8.1 which I have. Do you know if that is the case?

It's not a problem exclusive to Windoze. I have Snow Leopard on my Mac and if I use Safari GMail tells me that version of the browser is no longer supported. If I switch to Firefox the message disappears. The cynic in me wonders whether these upgrades just make it easier to harvest user data.

my understanding is that in win 7 + 8 you could choose to reject updates but in win10 (certainly the consumer product) you cannot easily do so tho most likely the knowledgeable will be able to - try https://news.ycombinator.com/ for a more specialised forum that generally has more thoughtful comments(tho forum not designed for non-specialists) - other considerations re privacy in win10 (and why I said 'even Chrome) Google no longer lives up to its 'do no evil' now it is a public company M/S has somewhat changed direction and looks towards cloudbased non-private services to mine your data

Every time I read these type of threads it reminds me of just exactly why I like my Mac.

                  Update

I was actually cut off (the video stopped) yesterday after about a minute and a message popped up telling me to update within 2 minutes. I tried a few more videos. All the same. After half a dozen tries, youtube seemed to have given up and when I went back to the first video, it played with no problems.

The message popped up again today but I closed it as it came up and had no more problems. So far.

Does anyone else have this disruption or is it because I am using an antique OS like Vista? As I noticed before, the prompt isn’t a simple update but upgrade to Windows 10, as far as I can see, that is.

I’ll keep ignoring it and see what happens.

P.S. I don’t think I’ll be tempted to go over to Mac. Can’t teach a new trick etc.

Get a Mac, but don't try to teach your dog to use it!

And I'm reminded why I consigned mine to the bottom of a wardrobe.

The main issue with using old operating systems, and old browsers is that they may have security problems that are not going to be fixed.

I'd ask myself the question - Are there any new features that I think I would like. If the answer is No then why go through the possibility of spending ages trying to get it to work with whatever drivers you are quite happily using at the moment. Leave well alone, is my motto. If it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it.

Which proves my point most eloquently. But if you will throw away a very good Mac because you can't work out how to use it then who am I to argue ?

                                - more-or-less how I was thinking; none of the new features look as if I'd ever have much use for them and the new appearance looks like it might take a while to get used to; neither of which would detract me from "upgrading" if there were distinct advantages to my doing so (such as future security updates) of which I was unaware. I'm quite content with what Windows7 does.
