BBC radio shows set for mobile and tablet downloads

    And about time too.

There have always been workarounds for the tech savvy listener but this will provide a much simpler way of doing it.

I hadn't seen this but it makes my latest thread a bit superfluous..... Anyway I downloaded BBC Radio Player to my new iPod and it's there - basically download where you see the symbol .... Which seems to be just about everywhere ... Especially of course Breakfast ......

So does download in this context mean: it's on your machine for the same time period as the 30 day iPlayer allocation, and then disappears? i.e. the download facility is to enable listening when offline during that timeframe.

Or do you have it on your machine permanently for ever after?

(And where is your thread anton? Would you like it merged / deleted? Or has that already happened? Can't see it anywhere!)

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Exactly the question I have idly wondered whenever "download" is mentioned in this context.

To be honest I don't know - all, I would expect, will be revealed with an official announcement??? I think I put it on Performance for some stupid reason ....... And now you really must excuse me - two grandchildren are tearing Gould Towers apart and Lady Gould's breakfast tray isn't ready ......

blimey, after a bit of faffing about, I managed to get the latest version of BBC Radio player installed.

downloading TTN to my ipad seems to take a fair time, but I guess it means I can at last download programmes and listen in the car.
              Hurrah.

so did we sort out if they self delete after the 30 days, or are they easily removable before then?
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

No, we didn't. (Nor, contrarily, whether they stay downloaded forever should someone so wish.)

Not sure what the point of downloading is, if the content only stays downloaded for the same amount of time as it's available on "Listen Again".

I assume it would be to enable listening when without an internet signal e.g. on the move, without consuming masses of 3G/4G capacity.

There does seem to be a "remove" button for downloads .
All fairly seamless on my ipad, actually, and potentially pretty useful.

Very handy if you want to listen to the Proms, on your way to the Proms, or in the Queue for the Proms.

The download will be deleted automatically 30 days after broadcast.
It means you can listen to programmes from the past 30 days in places such as the car without using up your mobile data allowance. If you want a download which you can keep indefinitely, you will need to resort to other techniques of recording.

It is not possible to use the app to download programmes when you are outside the UK but you can take downloads abroad, say on holiday, which you downloaded in the UK before you left.

Yes I was under the impression that this was always the case on PCs, desktops. (it was not a function I ever needed to use.)

So perhaps this development is merely the extension of that to mobile kit, as opposed to being some completely new facility.

The Guardian's 'good news' piece failed to mention that the number of operating systems supporting iPlayer and download technology is about to be drastically reduced by the BBC, who have got themselves into a predictable cul-de-sac in trying to be too cool.

Basically, if you've got a Windows phone or an old version of Android or IoS, you can expect iPlayer and downloading to cease soon. See here.
