Thank goodness I've still got the old, creaky machine - at least I can work it.
(And I connected the LaCie to the new computer with the USB cable and it didn't work. Dead as a dodo.It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Re Bluetooth don't you have to do something in System Preferences to turn it on, then go to the Keyboard and Mouse sections to "fire them up"? Might be slightly different in your OS version. Also some devices won't pair up properly with Mac OS - often if they've already been paired with something else. If that's the case then there's nearly always a brute force procedure to unpair the devices allowing them to connect to a different machine. Another possible problem is if you run another Mac with a Bluetooth keyboard or device at the same time. That can block new connections to other machines. The solution is to turn off anything else which mght interfere with the Bluetooth pairing. You should only have to do that once, to get the devices linked.
Good luck!
