Thanks for the suggestions - plenty to work on, with good reasons for them. What I really need to do is try them out, but the only Hi-Fi shop in Glasgow (that I know of) - Richer Sounds - doesn't seem to stock any of them. I suppose I could order them all on line, try them out & return the ones I don't like!

The Oppo PM3s are around £350 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Oppo-Classic.../dp/B00V87W084
They come in 4 colours, red, blue, white, black. Probably a coincidence, but one colour model got a very poor user review.

I spent a whole long day wearing a pair of these last year and while the sound was what one would expect for that amount of cash found them uncomfortable after a couple of hours.

The Oppos have been the most significant change in my listening gear in years. They aren't hi Fi sounding, simply very natural. I am not a headphone fan, and I tend to sweat very easily, but so far I have found them comfortable enough to wear for hours at a time and I don't seem to get the 'hole in the middle' effect that most cans produce.
By all means, if you can audition them, go for it. I think it must be more meaningful to audition headphones in a shop compared to other components, where there are so many other variables can effect the sound one hears in a demo.

I need a decent pair.
I'm thinking wired, around £100 , on-ear possibly. Any recommendations, or will I need to spend more to get something worth bothering with ?I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

For that price you can get the Oppo PM3, the good HI Fi Man budget offerings, and the B&W Combo Bluetooth/wired phones. At your price range, your best bet might be ear buds, which can sound very good imo without costing a Queens Ransom
